Titirangi Rudolf Steiner School’s Class 12 are delighted to present –
Molière’s Tartuffe et Plus
adapted and directed by Sasha Matthewman
at Lopdell House Theatre, Titirangi – 28th, 29th and 30th September.
Witty, thought-provoking and viciously funny, this seventeenth century satire carries modern resonances of anxiety and existential crisis in relation to pressing questions of spirituality and health. Where can we find our salvation in both heaven and earth? Who can we find to help guide us?
Molière was a comic genius playing out situations that stretch his extreme and fanatical lead characters to the breaking point of their fatal strategies. The contemporary issues that he raises cut deep and can suddenly turn serious.
This adaptation combines and contrasts two of Molière’s best comic portraits of dangerous obsession. Orgon from Tartuffe looks up to heaven and outward to the world with blind fanaticism whereas Argan from The Hypochondriac looks inward to the body and down to the earth with depressive, psychotic fervour/fever. Manipulating them all for his own corrupt and self-interested desires comes the religious hypocrite, Tartuffe, who plays all the characters with his unnerving energy and charismatic presence.
Tartuffe et Plus taps into the energy and pressure of Molière’s writing in a dynamic, physical and fast-paced production of his seriously comic scenes, without dodging the difficult and uncomfortable moments.
As many of you will know, Class 12 Plays are legendary – they are one of the defining experiences of every Waldorf-Steiner student’s school life – here you will get to see the culmination of the students’ many years of drama performed in a professional theatre.
Class 12 students selected this weighty but wickedly funny satire to perform and welcome you to an entertaining night of comedy from one of the world’s greatest playwrights.
Refreshments will be available prior and during the intermission at a charmingly themed ‘Café Français’.
